West Virginia is noted for its great natural beauty, its timber and coal mining heritage and labor-union organizing (mine wars in particular), and is also thought of as a tourist destination for people interested in outdoor activities, such as skiing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, fishing, and hunting. Located entirely within the Appalachian Range, it is a beautiful, biologically diverse rocky land, known by natives (and fans of John Denver) as Almost Heaven. It separated from Virginia over a political disagreement at the onset of the Civil War, whose scars are marked by historic monuments today. Its fragile economy has never enjoyed enough largesse for it to stress education, but health care is valued highly, making this a good choice for travel nurses. Medical Travelers Inc. gives good grades to hospitals in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, Wheeling, and Morgantown, and facilities in Weirton, Fairmont, and Beckley are not far behind. Most visitors stop at the Harper’s Ferry park, the New River Gorge bridge, the Green Bank telescope, or the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The second tier of attractions includes the Mystery Hole at Ansted, the world’s largest teapot at Chester, the world’s longest single arch steel span bridge at Fayettville, the Lost World Caverns at Lewisburg, the Mummies of the Insane at Philippi, the Home of Mothman at Point Pleasant, and the Coal Houses at White Sulphur Springs.
