South Dakota, the location of Mount Rushmore, is mostly fertile farm country—except for the Black Hills at the western edge, a source for gold, silver, copper, and lead. The capital, Pierre, began as a fur trading post; two other cities were started by land speculators. South Dakota is home to the Badlands, to the world’s largest naturally-heated swimming pool, and to Citibank; this is where Dances with Wolves was filmed. The cost of living is low, and there is plenty to do; besides nature pursuits, there is the Giant Prairie Dog, the World’s Largest Pheasant, the Outhouse Museum, Rapid City’s Dinosaur Park and its Reptile Garden, the International Vinegar Museum, and the Petrified Wood Park.
